Cron Job Generator

A cron job is a scheduled task that runs automatically at specific times or intervals on Unix-like systems.

The classic format is minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week. Use * for “any” and */n for steps.

For user cron: run crontab -e and paste the line. For system cron, place it in /etc/crontab (requires the user field) or a file in /etc/cron.d/.

Only /etc/crontab style entries include a user field. In a user crontab (crontab -e), omit it.

Enable logfile forwarding to append > logfile 2>&1, or configure cron mail output. Logs make it much easier to spot permission and environment issues.

Common causes: missing PATH, wrong permissions, scripts not executable, environment differences, and using relative paths. Prefer absolute paths and log output while testing.
